There is no doubt that every one of our four-footed friends is built a little differently, whether it's two different Maltese's or two different German shepherds, and getting dog clothes that fit appropriately just takes a few minutes and a simple measuring device. Of course, a ruler won't do, you need a cloth measuring tape, and can use a metal measuring tape if that's all you have. You can also use a piece of string, and then lay it on the ruler but careful measurements will help make your dog clothes not only look good, but also be comfortable for your best friend.

This is especially important if you have a dog of the bulldog variety, boxer, or even a stout Boston Terrier. You'll want to measure from the base of the tail up to the neck where you would prefer to see the coat lie comfortably. If you have a stout chested best friend, or one who is a bit overweight, you may want to move up a size. And of course if you have one of the thinner running bred dogs such as a greyhound, Saluki, or even a smaller, lighter framed Chihuahua, you may want to drop down a size. Any time you go up a size or down a size, understand that the coat will be shorter or longer, and may cause interference with biological activities.

This is especially true with male dogs, be sure to order a coat that will be comfortable for your dog to relieve himself. Many are terribly uncomfortable in coats or sweaters if they feel interference. You want a dog coat or sweater that is comfortable all the way around for your friend, you'll want one that is not to tight or loose, too long or short, or a dog coat that interferes with biological activities.
